Click on the sockets outlined in orange to select components for them. This view follows some conventions because it is not a three-dimensional representation. When a ship has components that would be symmetric across its longitudinal axis (that is, they'd overlap in this view), then they are arranged such that the topmost or leftmost component is the one on the side closest to the viewer. For example, the sprinter has two wing mounts that are displayed as rectangles touching and stacked on top of each other. The topmost rectangle would be the right wing mount (when looking along the forward direction).
